Leitrim Angling Centres

LEITRIM is renowned for its coarse fishing. What sets the county apart is the range and quality of species in the many local lakes, rivers and canals. Known as ‘Lovely Leitrim’, it has its own lake district and as far as fishing goes, all the boxes are ticked! There is a real potential to catch better-than-average fish of most species and Bolganard Lake, on the outskirts of Ballinamore, produced the current Irish record bream of 12lb 3oz.

A bonus in recent years has been the terrific amount of quality fish being caught on the canal running through the town of Ballinamore, then pushing on through a series of lakes and canals to Carrick-on-Shannon.  Bank access is very good and you will always discover somewhere out of the way in an unspoiled spot.

Gulladoo Lake near Carrigallen is a firm favourite with plenty of roach, bream and hybrids; Hollybank has great access but sport is generally with small fish, while close by is Glasshouse, a water choc-a-bloc with bream, roach and hybrids. Carrick-on-Shannon is famous as an angling holiday centre and sits astride the River Shannon where the bream, roach, hybrids and pike run big and the fishing stands on the “mud flats” have been totally rebuilt. Among the most popular waters recently is Lough Allen for its year-round sport with bream, hybrids and roach. Garadice Lough and Church Island for excellent all-round sport.
